German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, affirming Germany’s commitment to Bangladesh’s democratic transition, assured Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus of steadfast support during their meeting at the World Economic Forum in Davos. The Chancellor pledged, “You can rest assured that we will support you,” echoing his promise amid discussions on Bangladesh’s reform agenda under the interim government.
Chief Adviser Yunus detailed efforts to foster consensus among political parties through a consensus commission, aiming to finalize major reform reports. He highlighted plans for a July Charter, inspired by the democratic ideals of the recent student-led uprising. The leaders exchanged views on various issues, including the origins of the uprising, Bangladesh’s regional relations, the Rohingya crisis, and Myanmar’s security landscape.
Yunus underscored the youth’s pivotal role in the uprising, recounting poignant stories, such as a 12-year-old’s sacrifice for change. He advocated for stronger economic ties between Germany and Bangladesh, inviting German businessmen to explore investment opportunities in Dhaka, emphasizing Bangladesh’s potential as a manufacturing hub.
Additionally, Yunus affirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to SAARC and proposed regional energy cooperation, citing the benefits of hydroelectric power from Nepal for South Asia’s renewable energy transition. He sought Scholz’s backing for a safe zone in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, under UN supervision, for Rohingya refugees.
